Background
Following a community consultation held in May 2006
for service providers, the East Mississauga Community
Health Centre, in partnership with agencies servicing
the area, developed the East Mississauga Health
Promotion Committee to address the numerous social
determinants of health.
Purpose
- To advocate for culturally-sensitive,
cost-effective, novel, and holistic approaches to
health
- To create access to a network of
interdisciplinary health providers that represent
both the population of East Mississauga and the
relevant issues affecting community health
- To encourage inclusion of people representing
population of East Mississauga
- To raise awareness and education of health
promotion as an extension of medical/clinical care
- To stimulate and explore partnerships with
like-minded agencies/organizations who serve East
Mississauga
- To provide a unique collaborative in Peel that
champions the provision of holistic health care and
interdisciplinary health frameworks
Accountability
All members are accountable to the East Mississauga
CHC coordinating council, and the LAMP Board of
Directors
Membership
Everyone is welcome at the Health Promotion
Committee, providing their demonstrated commitment to
the principles of the group and the expectations of
membership as outlined in the Terms of Reference.
Members are expected to first attend an orientation and
can do so by contacting the Chair of the committee,
Nicole Ghanie-Opondo, Health Promoter and Community
Relations Officer at
nicoleg@lampchc.org.
Current Priority – Community Food Security
Members decided that community food insecurity was an
issue affecting almost all of the clients/participants
using services at the agencies around the table.
To address community food insecurity, the committee has
adopted a capacity building approach which includes
advocacy, supporting and catalyzing community owned and
operated food security initiatives, and stimulating
awareness and education of systemic alternatives to food
insecurity.
For information on our current priorities and any
questions, please email the Chair at
