Background
A Community Consultation launched on January 25th
2007 brought together 140 participants from Toronto,
Halton and Peel Regions to launch the Health and Racism
Working Group. The consultation provided a venue for
discussion, debate, engagement and unapologetic
acknowledgement of the health experiences of racialized
peoples. Presentations from the forum and a
Post-Consultation Report can be found
here.
Members of the Health and Racism Working Group include
social service agencies and residents of Mississauga.
Purpose
On behalf of community members, the Health and Racism
Working Group will advocate for better health access for
racialized communities in two mutually inclusive areas:
chronic disease prevention and management for racialized
groups, and reduction of racist systemic barriers in
health care system and practice. Our Terms of Reference
can be viewed
here.
Accountability and Structure
The Health and Racism Working Group is accountable to
LAMP’s Board of Directors and the East Mississauga CHC
coordinating council.
The Health and Racism Working Group is Chaired by an
Executive Committee, and in addition to the general
membership, there are three sub-working groups: Policy
and Partnerships, Research and Information, and Popular
Education.
